Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to be neater or have less clutter? If the answer is yes then today’s review item is one you’ll want to check out. The Neat Company offers the NeatDesk for Mac, which is a scanner/software combo that helps move the paper work off one’s desk into their Mac.

Neat desk for Mac is the desktop version of the same functioning NeatReceipts which we reviewed here at TestFreaks a few months ago. The Neat Company also make Windows versions of all their products including NeatDesk.

NeatDesk for Mac works with receipts, business cards, and documents turning them into digital versions that are filed away in the NeatWorks software. It uses an ADF (automatic document feeder) scanner to allow quick and simple digitization of one’s documents. The software also can integrate information into Mac’s Address Book and can export data into various formats including Quicken.

The NeatDesk for Mac arrives in an orange and white cardboard box with an image of the scanner on the front. On the back is a screen shot of the NeatWorks software with a list of features adjacent to this image. On one side of the box we find a list of scanner specs, box contents and system requirements. The other side shows a graphic image of the workflow when using the NeatDesk for Mac.

The scanner is packed up protected by recyclable cardboard inserts. Inside the package we find the Neat ADF scanner, the NeatWorks for Mac Install CD, a Quick Start Guide, a USB Cable, scanner calibration paper and a power supply.

The Neat scanner is an automatic document feeder allowing the user to scan up to 15 business cards, receipts and letter sized documents at once. The scanner tray has slots for each of these types of papers and can be removed to scan up to 50 letter-size documents at once.

The scanner measures 10.8”W x 7.5”D x 7.3”H and weighs 4.4 pounds. Other specs include up to 24 PPM Color, Grayscale, B&W (300dpi, A4 size, simplex). In addition the scanner can work with other imaging applications as well.

It is composed of white and gray plastic with two buttons with adjacent LEDs are found on the front – one marked Scan and the other PDF. On the bottom left corner we see the Neat logo. Towards the front is an extendable paper catcher along with another extension by the back paper feeder. On the lower right side just below the paper feeder is a button for opening the front of the Neat Scanner in case of paper jams occur.

The Neat Company designed this scanner to be low-profile and streamlined in its operation. The front of the machine rests at a 45° angle allowing papers to be easily fed into the scanner. This scanner is meant for heavy-duty digitization of your paperwork.

The paper input tray can be removed by placing one’s thumb and forefinger over the business card slot and lightly pushing upwards. The scanner has grooves on the side for reinserting this tray; simply slide it down until it clicks into place.

On the back we find the power switch, USB jack and AC connector. The AC connector is also labeled with the Neat logo making it easier to find when trying to unplug it from a full power strip.

To get started using the NeatDesk for Mac you’ll first need to install the NeatWorks software via the installation disk. Once this process is finished launched the NeatWorks software, which will require the input of the included product key to activate the software. The next step is to connect your scanner to an AC power supply and then connecting to the Mac using the USB cable. The Neat Company recommends avoiding the USB port on the Apple keyboard and connecting the scanner directly to the Mac.

Now you’re ready to digitize your paper clutter. The scanner operates using the Scan or PDF buttons found on the front of the machine or using the Scan button within the NeatWorks software. Simply place your receipts, business cards or documents into the proper slot on the input tray and get scanning.

I went into detail about the NeatWorks in my NeatReceipts review so I will skim over the software side of things. My previous experience with NeatWorks was a pleasant one and I found the software to be fairly user friendly.

Overall the interface is very “Apple” like in its appearance; scanned items fill up the body of the screen with the side bar storing the various folders and sub folders for your digital file cabinet.

As a Quicken user my favorite part of the NeatWorks software is the ability to export to the Quicken format saving me a lot of data entry time and effort.

The scanner worked like lightning digitizing the papers I fed it, it was the data analysis that took the most time. Thus a handful of documents would take a minute or two to process. Depending on the information within the document NeatWorks would file out the appropriate data fields or try as close as possible. While the process is not 100% accurate it was 90% on target during my usage.

Besides its speed, the Neat scanner is very quiet as well.

One drawback to a non flatbed scanner is that some documents would not always scan straight through creating a misaligned scan image. Most of the time NeatWorks was able to auto correct this skew but not always. Sometimes papers would get jammed or snagged but this was mostly with crumpled receipts.

Also I did not like the fact that the feeder sizes were fixed. Not all documents are created the same size but the largest document slot should fit most every type of paper you encounter.

Conclusion:

NeatDesk for Mac is an excellent solution they’re digitizing ones most common paperwork including receipts, business cards and documents. The scanner comes with an automatic document feeder which makes scanning a fast and simple process. The included NeatWorks software is user-friendly in its “Apple” like interface while being very robust and user configurable.

The main difference between the NeatDesk for Mac and the NeatReceipts version is the included scanner as the NeatWorks software is identical for both. With the NeatDesk for Mac the user trades off portability versus speed. The NeatDesk version allows the user to scan numerous documents at once as opposed to the NeatReceipts which scans 3 to 4 receipts per minute.

What may scare off most users from purchasing NeatDesk for the Mac is its price. However similarly priced ADF scanner solutions such as the ones from Fujitsu are in the same price range. The main differentiator between these brands is the bundled software which is a personal preference. My experience with NeatWorks has been a positive one and thus I would recommend NeatDesk for Mac for both the home and business user.

Recently while packing and unpacking for a move into my new home office I came to the realization of how much paper clutter occupied my workspace. During my research on how to optimize my work area using sites such as Unpluggd, I came across a product from the aptly named the Neat Company.

NeatReceipts for Mac is their streamlined way to transform one’s documents, receipts and contacts into digital information allowing this data to be easily archived, edited and stored. It comes as a bundled hardware-software solution to file your hard copy information into a digital filing cabinet.

What makes NeatReceipts for Mac especially appealing is the included extremely low profile, light weight scanner allowing one to take it on the road, to one’s office or just use it at home. It’s small size makes it easy to keep out of the way making for even less clutter in one’s office.

NeatReceipts for Mac arrives in a white and orange cardboard box with a picture of the scanner on the front. On the back of the package is an image of the Mac NeatWorks software along with a listing of features. The Neat Company gets additional points for being green by using 100% recyclable materials in the packaging.

Opening the box reveals the Neat scanner, a mini USB cable, a quick start guide containing the installation CD, set up instructions, calibration paper, dry cleaning paper and alcohol cleaning paper.

The Neat scanner is composed of mostly white plastic with a gray area around the document feeder. It measures 10.8″ x 1.6″ x 1.3″ and weighs only 10.6 ounces.

On the top left hand corner of the scanner we see the Neat logo and a PDF and Scan button towards the right with an LED light adjacent to these buttons.

The front of the scanner has the document feeder with an icon for proper scan alignment on the right. The scan area measures 1″ x 1″ to 8.5″ x 14″. The scanner has a max resolution of 600 dpi, Bit depth in color- 48-bit input, 24/48-bit output, while in grayscale- 16-bit input, 8/16-bit output; B/W- 1-bit. It can scan 3-4 receipts per minute.

On the right-hand side of the scanner is the mini USB port that is USB 1.0 & 2.0 compatible. The Neat Company designed the scanner to run off USB power, so an external power supply is not necessary. On the back of the Neat scanner is the document output area.

The bottom of the scanner has two rubber feet to keep it from sling along its resting surface and a product tag in the center.

Prior to hooking up the Neat scanner you will need to install the NeatWorks for Mac scanning software. The installation file comes on a CD but for those using a Mac without an optical drive (such as myself) you can download the software from the Neat Company website. Installation takes a minute or two; once NeatWorks is initially run you will need to enter the product key to activate the software.

At this point a launch screen should appear at which time you can connect the Neat scanner to one’s Mac.

From this launch screen you can register your software, customized application settings, calibrate your scanner and view a video demo among other things.

The main screen of NeatWorks is the Neat Library where all of your digital files reside, can be organized and digitally filed away. Neat uses a software paradigm that should look familiar to users of Apple Mail, iTunes and other Apple designed software.

The left side of the screen is similar to the Apple Mail pane layout but features Places, Folders and Smart Folders instead of mailboxes.

Places stores all initial scans that are loaded into a “catchall” In Box. Below it is contact information that syncs directly to the user’s Mac Address Book.

“Folders” is where your digital file cabinet resides. Here you can file items into one of three main categories – Contacts, Documents, and Receipts. The user can create sub categories within these main categories. Additionally these folders can be synced to another location allowing for the back up of your important digital information.

At the bottom left corner is an information pane that shows the scanning status or the information about the PDF being viewed.

On the top is a navigation bar with a Scan button with an option pull down adjacent to it. Five additional buttons allow the importing of PDFs, new scan, deletion of a scan, editing of a scan and emailing a scan.

The main window information can be viewed three ways from the View icons also on the navigation bar.

The beauty of NeatWorks is its OCR (optical character recognition) engine, which scans and populates the data into the appropriate fields from the culled information. Of course this is dependent on the clarity and legibility of the source material but I found it to be pretty accurate for the most scans

If for some reason the information does not auto-populate or more information needs to be inserted, the Editor screen allows dragging of information from the document into specific fields. Besides the preset fields, you can customize these areas with other prefilled or user defined fields.

For those who need to use this scanned data in other formats NeatWorks allows information to be exported to Excel, Numbers, Quicken and TurboTax formats.

Overall the software is very robust with the ability to be tailored to the specific users needs. Without this excellent software you’d basically be purchasing an expensive portable scanner but the software alone is worth the price.

Additionally, the Neat Company is coming out with an update to NeatWorks earlier in the coming year – NeatWorks 5 that should add other features such as tagging and more “Mac” like integration. The Windows update is coming eve sooner. The best news about this upgrade is that it is free to prior Neat product owners. Check out www.neat.com/neat5 for more information on the upgrade.

Conclusion:

NeatReceipts for Mac is the ideal solution for those who wish to slay the paper monster that envelops their workspace. It is perfect for both the business and home user for managing finances, important documents and contact information. The scanner is portable allowing the system to come on the road or reside out of the way on one’s desk. The ability to export data to Excel, Numbers, Quicken and TurboTax helps avoid unnecessary data input by the end-user.

The imminent release of Neat Works 5 will hopefully make an outstanding digital filing system even more powerful. If you wish to go “digital” with your home or work office then NeatReceipts for Mac is the way to go.

Up for review today I’ve got a scanner from Epson called the Perfection V330 Photo Scanner. By the name you could guess it’s made for photos so it can scan negatives, but you can do a lot more like OCR and it also can act like a copier, scanning directly to your printer. The scanner includes a few software programs that work well with it. The V330 itself is fast and quiet, but it has one small problem, read on to learn more..

No video today for you, just the traditional unboxing.

The scanner comes packaged very well in it’s Epson branded box.

There’s a few things included with the scanner like the power supply, USB cable, negative holder, quick start guide and the software/driver disc.

The scanner itself is black plastic, and there’s four buttons located on the bottom edge. The buttons are for power, scan to PDF, scan to email and scan to printer actually. I like the last one, it essentially turns the scanner into a copier which is a nice feature.

The back edge of the scanner is where you’ll find the hinge that is very expandable. On that back edge you’ll also find the power connection and the USB port. The power and USB connections just seem to be in an odd space really, I don’t know why they would be near the front like they are and not on the back or near the top of the scanner.

Opening the lid you’ll find the scanning glass as expected. The top half is white, but there’s a handle there that you can pull to reveal the negative scanning part of the V330.

The negative scanner also fits onto the scanner glass, there are spaces just for it to fit.

Full Auto mode is just what it sounds like, not much for the end user to do except hit Scan and wait.

Under the Customize tab you won’t find much really:

The other modes offer more features as you might expect, with the ability to configure or set things how you want them.

Under the Configuration option for the three modes besides Auto you’ll find three more tabs to make adjustments.

Included also is Arcsoft MediaImpression software for handling media basically.

The other program included is Arcsoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe which is used to scan things larger than the scanner and then you’ll put them back together to form one large image.

I mentioned earlier about the ability of the hinge to expand, and here’s just how much it expands:

That’s a whole hardback book in there that’s over 1 inch thick, so you’ll be able to easily scan large things in it.

Scanning with the V330 is quiet and relatively fast and it works very well. I scanned a few things including pictures, black and white text and that same book I showed you earlier.

As far as negatives, sadly I couldn’t find any in my home. They’re packed away somewhere since we went all digital a while ago. I know I have some somewhere, but where I have no clue at all.

I did though try out the OCR program which is ABBYY FineReader 9.0 Sprint and it worked perfectly.

When scanning via OCR you can scan to Word, Excel or PDF and you can scan and then email them as well. I scanned the booklet that came with the V330 and it came out perfectly.

Conclusion:

The Epson Perfection V330 Photo Scanner offers a lot of features at a relatively low price, it’s fast and quiet and it works very well.

The OCR part works great, no issues there, and I really like the ability to use it as a copier.

The included software works well, not that I would use most of it, especially the ArcSoft MediaImpression which I find rather pointless. The other stuff can be useful like the Scan-n-Stitch and the OCR software.

Yes it’s a big scanner, but that’s a good thing really as you can scan large documents and photos. The hinge expands a lot to allow scanning thick books and even 3D objects.

I really can’t find anything wrong with this scanner other than the horrible placement of the power and USB connections, I don’t understand the thinking behind the design.

Stand alone scanners have their place I guess, but I think we’re going to see them phased out really except for high-end professional usage. We have all of these all-in-one units that work just as good, at least for me they do.

Pros:
+Easy install and setup
+Works just like a copier
+Good scans
+Quiet operation
+Fairly fast scanning
+Hinge expands a lot for scanning large things

Cons:
-Odd power and USB placement

Up for review today I’ve got another Canon product, but not a camera or anything like that it’s a scanner from their office or business line of products. The scanner is small and meant to be portable and easy to use, it’s called the imageFormula P-150 or Scan-tini. The scanner can be used with the power of just your USB port, and it’s rather small so you can toss it in your bag for scanning on the go. One of my favorite features of this scanner is the fact that it has the software built into it, you don’t even have to install anything to use it. The Scan-tini is quiet and fast and produces very good results, so read on to learn more..

Well I thought I had a video for you today, but I guess not, for some reason it won’t upload in any format.. So we’ll do it the old-fashioned way.

Inside the box you’ll find the scanner itself, software/driver disc, user manual and other documentation, a spacer and two USB cables.

One USB cable is the regular kind, and the other is the type with a power connection on the end as sometimes the scanner might require some additional power.

The scanner itself is very nice looking indeed. It’s small yes, but I wouldn’t exactly call it portable, but yeah you could take it with you, it just means you’re carrying an extra 2.1 lbs with you. It’s only 11 inches long 3.7 inches wide and 1.7 inches tall. The P-150 seems well made, but I still wouldn’t want to drop it too many times. The entire scanner is basically black with a glossy top with the Canon logo and the name of the product on it. The bottom has rubber feet and a label.

On the front of the scanner you can see a hinge, and at the bottom you’ll lift to open it.

On the back you’ll find power/mode switch, UBS port and power port.

The scanner unfolds pretty big:

On the back paper tray are adjustable sliders for paper width and then there the leafs that come out of the top to hold long paper steady.

There’s only one button on the scanner that looks like a power button actually.

You can pop the scanner open by using a small button to the left of the Canon logo. There’s really no reason to open except for maintenance really.

There’s only one little LED on the scanner, it’s off to the left, it’s a blue LED that comes on when powered on.

There are two UBS cables with it, I only had to use one with my main PC, just the regular UBS cable. The manual says you might need to use the other cable to provide extra power or to provide a faster scanning speed. Most likely you’ll need the extra power cable with a laptop as they usually don’t have powerful enough USB ports. I did hook it up out of curiousity and I didn’t notice any real difference in scanning speeds with the second cable attached, maybe a 1/2 second, not worth the trouble I would think really.

There is software included on the disc, but you don’t need to use it really as the scanner has built-in software and this is a great feature really.

Here’s the loading screen with the software you can install, the drivers, CaptureOnTouch, User Manual, BizCard 5 SE and PaperPort 11. I’ll get into the CaptureOnTouch more shortly, but the BizCard 5 SE is for scanning business cards and PaperPort is a well known scanning program for recognition.

So I plugged in the scanner and up popped the window, the scanner is actually recognized as an external storage device where you can launch OnTouchLite directly from the scanner. So you can use the scanner with any Windows computer without every installing anything. Don’t worry Mac users, there’s a P-150M scanner version just for you.

Launching the software takes you to the main window:

Before you do anything you’ll want to explore the settings and maybe change some stuff around. Here’s the settings with things expanded as well:

When you’re scanning you can save to several images formats or even directly to PDF.

Scanning is simple, set everything the way you want then press start. The P-150 is fast, very fast, 2-3 seconds per sheet, even photos are done fast. The best part about this scanner is that it automatically recognizes double sided pages and scans both sides at the same time for you.

Here’s some samples, I downsized them of course for the web, but these are text, text and graphic and pictures from a catalog actually. I get a lot of PR stuff so I figured why not make use of it!

Very nice scans, colors come out great and it handles black and white very well also.

I did install the software called CaptureOnTouch and it’s pretty much the same as the built-in software.

You can also use the button that looks like a power button now to scan with, just press the button and it’ll scan your documents. Here’s a couple more examples I did that way, they’re pretty much the same.

Some of the other features include auto color detection, auto page size detection, deskew, pre-scan, prevent bleed-through, remove background, RGB color dropout and red enhance.

As far as power is concerned you might need to use both USB cables or you could also buy the optional AC adapter.

Conclusion:

The Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini is a great little scanner really, and yes it’s little so you can take it with you.

The scans taken with the P-150 are very good overall. The unit itself is fast and quiet, and it has an auto-document feeder so you can scan multiple items if need be.

It’s small size makes it great for office use, you can use it and then just put it aside out of the way. It does weigh in at a little over two pounds, so it’s portable yes, but I wouldn’t want to take it everywhere with me that’s for sure, especially if I was also carrying a laptop.

One of the best feature I think is the fact that it has bu8lt-in software, you can use it with virtually any computer and never have to install anything.

The P-150 works great and I like it a lot really.

The main issue I have with it is the price, I think it’s a bit on the expensive side, but the quality of the scanner is very good and the performance is great as well.

Today we are reviewing the Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE scanner. It is a negative film and slide scanner. For you completely digital people out there I’ll explain: Film is an analog way of capturing an image. Instead of a digital sensor collecting photons there is a light sensitive emulsion onto which the light is shone. Then, through a chemical process, the film is developed to create the final image. From this image we can make prints. To get the image into the computer it has to be scanned. That’s what we have film scanners for.

I mostly make pictures using my DSLR or a digital point-and-shoot now-a-days. However, I still have some old film cameras lying around that I really like to use from time to time. I also have a lot of old negatives and slides that I would love to digitize so I can use them as easily as I use my digital-from-the-start images. I would essentially have the same workflow to make digital albums, send for prints, make photo books or publish on the web. That would be nice!

Unboxing

The scanner comes nicely packaged in a large box. Let’s begin by unboxing it.

Setup

Setup is very easy, just plug in the power cord and connect the scanner to the computer with the included usb cable.

Software and Installation

There are two different versions of the OpticFilm 7600i: SE and Ai. The one we have for review is the SE version. The difference between the two is the included scanning software; SilverFast. See here for a comparison of the SE and Ai versions of SilverFast. The biggest difference is that with the Ai version, the scanner can be color calibrated.

The software consists of two parts, the scanning software called Silverfast and the scanner driver. Setup of the scanner driver is straight forward. Silverfast setup however didn’t go as smoothly. The installation program on the included CD said “Installer Config File broken or not available”. I finally managed to get the software installed by running an install program that I found in the \en\SilverFast directory.

Workflow

My workflow when scanning basically looks something like this:

Mount film strip or slides into the film holder and then put it in the machine.

Push the IntelliScan button to start the scanning software.

Prescan the image to get a preview of what the final image will look like.

Adjust image parameters and scan settings. Most important to me are image cropping, levels, white balance and output resolution.

Scan the image to file.

Now I’ve got an original image that I can put through any other workflow. I can put it into Adobe Lightroom or another imaging software. Actually the image I have now is a sort of digital original much like the raw files I get out of my DSLR. The processing is not really finished yet for most applications and I will need to work with it some more to make a print out of it or publish it on the web.

Scanning Using Scanpilot

The Silverfast software contains a helper window called Scanpilot that guides you through the scanning process. It really helps to get you up and running in no time.

First, start the prescan to get a preview image of what the final scan will look like.

Set the type of film.

Crop the image by tracking the edges of the image.

Press the next ScanPilot button to auto-adjust image parameters.

Set the image name and output resolution.

Now we are ready to launch the final scan. Press the scan button.

Then, choose the file type, quality and filename. You can choose between JPEG and TIFF. TIFF is lossless but requires a lot of space on your hard drive.

Canon EOS 5, EF 50mm f/1.2L, Fujichrome Provia 100F

I found the Scanpilot feature to be very useful to get up and running quickly.

Scan Quality and Resolution

I have tested scanning slides and both black and white and color negative film. The overall quality is very good. I have mostly used the scanner at 2400 or 3600 dpi which is plenty for most applications. If you scan at 7200 dpi you can print the image at a 24 time magnification at 300 dpi. So a scan at 7200 dpi would let you print images that are almost one meter wide.

Canon EOS 5, EF 50mm f/1.2L, Fujichrome Provia 100F

Here is a 100% crop of the same slide shot scanned at 2400 dpi and 7200 dpi. First 2400 dpi (click the images for full size):

And at 7200 dpi:

As you can see the grain of this fine grained slide film is resolved at 7200 dpi. When looking at 100% magnification, there is some noise and slight banding, but it will only show up if you are pixel peeping. The file size when using TIFF and 7200 dpi is a whopping 180MB. Overall, I am impressed with the quality of the scans.

If you need extra high quality scans, there is a function called MultiScan that will scan the same image up to 16 times and then combine the scans into one image in order to minimize noise and grain.

Scan Time

The table below shows the time taken to scan a slide image from the time of pressing Save in the Save as file dialog and seeing the image in the image viewer after a completed scan. The scanning times I am getting are quite a bit longer than the ones published by Plustek. I suspect I am not getting USB 2.0 speeds for some reason. All scans including the prescan use up about 12 seconds before the actual scanning begins, that’s included in the times below.

If I find the problem with my USB setup I’ll come back and update these timings.

Sound Level

The scanner is very quiet.

Ease of Use

I found the scanner to be easy to use. Plus points for having a real on/off-switch and not a stand-by switch. You can start the scanning software by pressing the IntelliScan button on the front of the scanner, a nice touch.

White balance of the scanned images can be pretty hard to achieve manually, but using the white balance selector (by clicking in the middle of the Highlight-Shadow-Tool-button) makes it pretty easy. Just use the tool and select a white, gray or black part of the image to set the white balance.

Build Quality

The scanner is well built and feels nice and sturdy. There are little swing doors that keep out any dust when the unit is not in use. The two included film strip holders feel solid and hold film strips of six images or four slides respectively.

Portability

The scanner is small and compact. There’s a practical bag included that you can put the scanner and its accessories in if you need to take it with you.

Bluish Cast

When scanning negative film, both black and white and color film, at 2400 dpi there was a bluish, magenta cast in the final image that wasn’t there in the preview. The problem didn’t appear when scanning slides. In the following screenshot the lower image is the final image and contains the bluish cast.

I tried upgrading both the scanning software and the scanner driver to the latest versions from the web. Nothing worked. After much trial and error I noticed that the cast only shows up at 2400 dpi. 2400 dpi had become my resolution of choice because of the nice trade-off between speed and resolution. However, if I scan the same image again at 3600 dpi it turns out just the way I saw it in the prescan preview. I don’t know what causes this, but at least there is a work around which is scanning at 3600 dpi. The next image was scanned using 3600 dpi.

Canon EOS 5, EF 50mm f/1.2L, Fujicolor Superia Reala

Multi-Exposure

The scanner has a function for doing multi-exposure scans to increase the exposure density. I tried the feature with the above image to try to get more information from the highlight and shadow areas.

This is the result of the multi-exposure scan:

Canon EOS 5, EF 50mm f/1.2L, Fujicolor Superia Reala

Except from being a little warmer due to different white balance settings, I can’t see much difference in the two images. Maybe there is a little more shadow detail, but it is hard to tell.

iSRD Scratch and Dust Removal

iSRD (Infrared Smart Removal of Defects) uses an extra scan with infrared light to find and remove specks of dust or scratches. It works pretty well with slides or negative color film. This is an example of before and after iSRD using slide film. The image has a big speck of dust right in the middle.

As you can see the dust spot is removed in the second image.

That’s all very well. However, when I tried the same thing on black and white negative film, the results weren’t so nice. First of all the processing took a very long time to complete, with 100% CPU usage indicating that something was not right. The resulting image has some kind of digital triangle shapes in it and no dust or scratches seem to have been removed at all. See before and after iSRD:

Pretty strange and not so pretty. This is using the latest drivers and the latest version of SilverFast SE. 6.6.1r6 as of this writing.

Instead of relying on the built-in dust removal I use a dust blower and make sure my film is clean before scanning. That won’t work for removing scratches though.

Conclusion

The scanner is quiet and fast and the results are very good. The problems I had with dust removal in black and white and the bluish cast at 2400 dpi bring down the final grade a notch. But otherwise the Plustek OpticFilm 7600i SE is very nice to work with and it produces some stunning scans.

Before we had digital cameras everything was done with film, which means most of us have all kinds of photographs floating around. They’re nice but the problem is that with time they will fade and of course they’re fairly fragile as well, susceptible to fire, water, humidity etc, and it would be a shame to lose our memories. The one thing we can do is transfer them over to our computers so we have them copied digitally and for the most part they’re better protected than the originals, and if something would happen to them then there would be a digital backup. If you’ve ever tried scanning pictures with a regular sized flatbed scanner then you know it can be a real pain to do, it just never seems to work out right, to do it correctly you need a dedicated picture scanner.

The product I have for review today is the Photolink One-Touch Scanner from a company called Pandigital. Pandigital mostly makes digital picture frames, but they recently released this product as sort of an accompaniment to their digital photo frame lineup, but it can be used alone as an excellent photo scanner. The Photolink can scan up to a 4×6 photograph, and it does it amazingly fast and with excellent results, it also essentially upscales the photo as well so you end up with a hi-res picture that you can blow up without much quality loss.

I have to say I love this product, for me it’s exactly what I need to transfer my photos to my computer, it’s well made, it’s very fast and it does a great job..

The Pandigital Photolink One-Touch scanner is very simple to use, just put the memory card in, turn it on and insert a picture, the scanner senses the picture and pulls it through for the scan. It’s very fast as well, just a couple seconds and the picture is done. Of course if you’ve got a different sized picture there is a slider on the right side that moves so you can even scan wallet sized photos and business cards if you wish.

I’ve reviewed a lot of products in my time and this has to be one of the coolest and most useful ones of all, at least it ranks up there very high on a short list of products that I feel are exceptional.

One complaint I could have about this scanner is that you can’t scan directly to your computer with it, you can hook it to your computer via USB and immediately pull the pictures from the memory card. You can just leave the window open and as you scan the pictures will appear, but you can’t use it as you would any other scanner hooked to your computer. It’s not that big of a deal though really, my Epson WorkForce 600 has the same ability, I can stick a USB stick or memory card in it and scan directly to it, so it’s sort of the same in that respect.

Over on my blog I started a series of scans of postcards, my Grandfather was in World War II and traveled all over the world and he collected postcards while he was there. I started the series but kind of got away from it because it was just a pain to do with a flat bed scanner, it never seemed to work right if I scanned one, and if I scanned a lot of them I would have to go in and crop the individual pictures out and save them. It was just a very time consuming process that I just figured I would get back to eventually, and well eventually never came so it’s been a while since I updated that section. Now though I can scan them in very quickly and they look excellent, it took less than two minutes to scan 21 of them, maybe a minute and a half, and it was just very easy to do.

and here they are, check them out, they’re old so they do show signs of age, but I think they’re a rather unique piece of history.

Some of the scans do have lines going through them, that’s only because the scanner needed calibrated. Pandigital included a special calibration card, and even a little cleaning kit as well to make sure the scanner gives you good quality scans. I left them in just for example sake, once the scanner is calibrated the pictures don’t have the lines of course and they look very good.

Scanners are something that many people overlook when it comes to computer peripherals, most people think that any old scanner will do, but there are many differences between them. I’ve personally owned one scanner or another over the years, mainly for copying, and scanning images into my computer, and I’ve come to realize that, as with anything, you get what you pay for.

Today for review I’ve got a scanner, it’s the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 Mobile scanner and it’s just an excellent all around product that works perfectly for everything that it does. It features dual power sources, so you can use it while traveling with power from a USB port, or use a standard AC adapter for home or office use. Its small and lightweight making it very portable, it scans double sided documents and can import them directly to PDF format if you wish. the ScanSnap S300 can also scan to JPEG and will scan business cards, then import the information directly into your contacts for you. The ScanSnap S300 is just a great scanner all around, be it for home/office use or on the go…

Installing the ScanSnap is easy to do, just install the drivers and software and you’re set, you’ll need to at least install ScanSnap manager for scanning, but if you want full functionality it’s best install ScanSnap Organizer and CardMinder as well.

CardMinder is an easy to use OCR business card scanning program that will scan your cards and import them to your contacts if you wish. It scans both sides of the cards and reads them for you, for the most part it does a very good job at recognition, with the exception of odd logos and graphical logos.

When you’ve got the ScanSnap S300 up and running you should have ScanSnap Manger running in the tray, it has two modes, basic and advanced, I personally use advanced mode as it offers more options and more control over scanning. The interface is easy to use, it’s essentially for setting up the scanner, if you wish to scan either PDF or JPEG files you’ll need to select which one from the interface. You can also go in and associate the scanner with other applications as well, so it can be used with them. The interface allows you full control over all aspects of scanning, from resolution and quality to paper size and compression rates.

Here’s the basic mode:

When it’s done scanning, in a few seconds, ScanSnap Organizer opens to let you see and edit the file if need be:

Scanning is very fast actually it easily gets the rated times, I was pleasantly surprised by how fast this thing is. The ScanSnap S300 is fairly quiet as well, and the scans come out nice and sharp. Even with pictures they look great in either JPEG or PDF formats.

Overall the ScanSnap is very easy to use, and I really like the fact that it can scan double sided pages, no more flipping it over, one pass and you’re done.

While using USB power, scanning is a bit slower as can be expected, but not as much as you would think running off of a 5v USB connection. Of course though if you’re using it with your laptop, you might lose a bit of battery life, though that would be more if you were scanning tons of documents via USB power. I think for just a few documents you’d never notice any diminish in battery life.

The size of this scanner is small, it’s small enough, and light enough to throw in a bag or briefcase, and even it you’re not going mobile with it, the ScanSnap S300 won’t take up much space at all on your desk. You could probably just toss it into a desk drawer for storage and easy access.
