Paint.NET was open source, but with recent updates they changed to just free.

@George, what’s up with Java? It does not bloat your PC as .Net does.
Anyway, SSuite Office is not Open Source. This blog is not about FREE software but about OPEN SOURCE software. This means that you can obtain the code source. For mere mortals, it does not change anything except that if something goes wrong, an open source product can survive if there is a large community of users and programmers while a free products just die.

Have you ever considered SSuite Office as a free alternative to MS Office?

Their software also doesn’t need to run on Java or .NET, like MS Office and so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small, efficient, and easy to use.

To Jared’s point, I don’t think PAINT.NET is an open source program. Nevertheless, it’s available free, so I do admit it should be recommended.

From the entire list of programs, I personally feel 2 of them are really well developed and ported into Windows – that is, GIMP and OpenOffice.org. These two applications were phenomenal. People tend to forget these are actually open source applications!

I didn’t see anything about Paint.NET. I love that app as it is more intuitive for general use than GIMP (which I use for heavy image work).

Great list, I would substitute Songbird for Foobar2000 as the go to music player on Windows. Low memory usage and a built in file converter. Also its open source as well.

Another great game is BZFlag, available on Windows, Linux, and other operating systems. It’s been in development since the 90s, so it’s very mature.

What do you think of PAINT.NET? I’ve been using that for awhile with good results (I don’t do major graphics) but I would switch to GIMP if there were more features.
