Ever hear a song on the radio and you could not find the title of it? Just place your iPhone near the music and Shazam will display the details of the song, the artist, title and album art (after a few seconds). How they do it is beyond me!

Pandora is the portable client of the automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. By creating an online account and then setting up a radio station based on an artist, Pandora will play music that has a similar musical genetic print. For instance if you choose Ben Harper, you are likely to hear Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Bob Marley and G. Love and Special Sauce.

My personal favorite iPhone/iPod Touch app is the one for the Sonos music system. I love my Sonos system; however, the Sonos remote is rather cumbersome when trying to sort through a large musical library. Sonos has released the iPhone remote which connects via the wireless Sonos network and lets the user navigate and search the Sonos system using the iPhone’s touch screen. Finding some Clapton has never been easier! Plus, using this app makes the Sonos a much more palatable price point, since you can buy just a Sonos ZonePlayer 90 for $349 and use your iPhone/iTouch as a controller.

Keeping with the remote motif, Remote is an Apple released app that turns your iPhone/iPod Touch into a wireless controller for your iTunes, AppleTV and AirTunes. Want to play a particular song, use the search feature to type out the name. A pass code will pair the Remote app to whatever device you are using, so if you have multiple Macs in the house, you don’t accidently blast Van Halen from Mom’s iMac.

If you work in the medical field, then you probably know of Epocrates RX and have used it on your Palm or Blackberry. Now it is on the iPhone/iPod Touch. With it you can check medication information, side effects, interactions, and identify pills by shape, size, color, imprint, etc. This is a must have if you work in the medical field. Even, if you do not, it is still pretty useful, especially for the hypochondriacs!

Wikipanion is a portable version of Wikipedia which is the online encyclopedia that can be edited by users, so some of the information is not always accurate. Still it is a great source of knowledge and having easy access comes in handy.

If you are like me and frequent Starbucks more than economically feasible, then the Easy Wi-Fi app is something you should have on your iPhone. This app lets the user log onto the now free AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots. Using some wireless voodoo, just click on the app and when in the range of an AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot and you will be automatically logged in. All it takes is a one time set up and you are set for your next trip for a triple espresso latte!

FileMagnet is a wireless file transfer app that allows the iPhone or iPod Touch to exchange files via a desktop conduit also called FileMagnet. When the iPhone or iPod Touch are on the same Wi-Fi network, then the files will transfer. To put something on the iPhone, just drag the file to the desktop application and it should be sent over.

Everyone loves games, at least the immature folks like me. Here are a few must have games for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Super Monkey Ball is one of the first games released for the iPhone and takes advantage of the built in accelerometer. Imagine a marble on a flat surface and navigating it along razor thin ledges and that is the control scheme for Super Monkey Ball. Of course, you have to replace the marble with a monkey trapped in a huge hamster ball, but you get the idea!

Labyrinth is the iPhone/iPod touch version of the classic game where you control a steel ball by tilting a wooden labyrinth. The full version of Labyrinth has over 500 levels and is controlled by the iPhone/iPod Touch’s accelerometer with high accuracy. There is both a paid and free version of this app.

Fieldrunners is a tower defense game specifically made for the iPhone / iPod Touch. Enemies spawn at one end of the map and attempt to reach the other end of the map. Your job is to stop an enemy from reaching their goal. The game starts you off with a small amount of coins and 10 seconds to start building your towers. Defeating the enemy gains more coins, thus allowing you to upgrade your towers.

We have all played Bejeweled on other cell phones or on Xbox live, admit it! Now you can play Bejeweled 2 in landscape and portrait mode. Killing time has never been more fun. Plus, a cool feature is now you can play your iPod music during gameplay.

X Plane 9 is for the amateur pilot, this is a flight simulator that uses the iPhone’s accelerometers to control a virtual aircraft. The graphics are really impressive and has some real fluid game play. There are four aircraft to choose from and plenty of controls for managing the throttle, flaps, gear and brakes.

Another great game is Trace, which is an awesome game, harder than it looks and best of all, is free. In this game you draw your own path through the levels and navigate past obstacles to reach your goal. Sounds simple, plays hard

This one is not a game per say but one of my personal favorites is the Original PhoneSaber. Unfortunately, this app has been “updated” and by updated, I mean made worse. Regrettably due to licensing issues, the app was modified and became adware for THQ. Now known as LightSaber, it prominently features an ad for THQ’s the Force Unleashed. No one likes a sell out!

If you have trouble falling asleep or this article is making you somnambulant, then aSleep is a nice bed time app for you. It is a white noise generator which includes Rain, Wind, Beach, Forest, Relax and Meditation sounds. Plus the timer lets you save you battery and shuts off after a specified period of time.

Keeping with the theme of relaxation, we recommend Koi Pond. This virtual koi pond is soothing to watch and shows off some more power of the iPhone/iPod Touch. Brush your fingers over the top of the water and watch the ripple, see the fish scatter. All you need is some iFish Food!

Admit it, when you first saw Google Earth on the PC or Mac, you were impressed. It is a seriously cool program. Now add the accelerometer of the iPhone and it is that much more extraordinary. Use the locate feature to fly to your current location, search for places around the globe with Google Local Search.

These are just a few of the better iPhone/iPod Touch apps currently available. It is not a definitive list and I am sure some of you have some you would like to recommend. So please feel free to leave a comment down below and have a great Holiday Season!
