Seriously disagree with 'Camera Sales Girl" comment on Pentax K-X being the worst camera out there !!. Wow she is highly mis infomred and has no clue what she is talking. Just read the reviews out there and it is the best High-ISO entry level DSLR out there, even outperforming semi-pro cameras like D90 and 50D in High ISO. Has true HDR capability. DP review has rated the camera highly and even the latest T2i is hard pressed to match the ISO ability of Kx. I only wish Pentax put this sensor on the K7. That's all I need to buy it...waiting for the K8 or whatever successor. Okay that apart, the test freak author messed up on this one...no Sony ! misfit Fz35. Even though not a 2009 camera, the Canon XSi is far superior camera and deserves a mention.

This is late, but just had to chime in. "Camera Sales Girl" is seriously mis-informed. The Pentax k-x may possibly be THE best bang for the buck dslr right now. AA rechargables are great (Eneloops in particular are fantastic), and last well over a 1000 shots. No idea where she got the information that "you have to use lithiums"???

Fine Best of... and agree with. IMHO Nikon D300s is a little bit too low and a Panasonic is in the top... Eventually the GF1 or Olympus E-P2...

Not only did he miss the Sony's, but some of the camera's included are ridiculous. The fz35 is not an SLR in any way what so ever. Are you classifying an SLR as a larger camera that has a big lens? I suggest that you look up the definition...SINGLE LENS REFLEX!! Not a point and shoot. Also the Pentax kx is the worst SLR out there. It takes AA batteries, which in itself in my opinion is crazy. Oh and you cant use just any batteries, no alkaline, not even rechargeables, you have to use lithium batteries, 4 of them and they aren't cheap, any other kind wont even turn the camera on.

Canon 7D came out in November of '09. You missed the Canon 5DII, one of the most coveted cameras out there (Febuary '09). No mention of any Sony dSLR's though they hold a solid third in popularity and use Zeiss and Minolta lenses not to mention also make a 24MP full frame camera. non-dSLR's in a top 10 dSLR list? what's up with that? If you're going to do that I can think of many more impressive non-dSLR's . If short on candidates, this may help: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/

What makes this author qualified to post this? Did he use any of these cameras or just read other reviews online to generate a pro/con list?

What no Sony? Where did all the Sony alphas go? I have a Sony alpha 700...and I love it. I think it is better than most of the above.

I own a Canon 5D Mark II and a Nikon D300s.

I can tell the difference, the Nikon D300s has a much better Autofocus than my 1 year old 5D Mark II.
Nikon AF is stiff ahead of any Canon DSLR. Because AF is an important feature, i use my D300s more often when ISO isn't an issue.

The D300s is a really really great DSLR.... trust me. (take this from a 5D Mark II owner)
