The problem is size. Small speakers are just not going to sound that great, especially not if you just have one. Comparing to the older devices is not fair because their design was more or less a full sized speaker enclosure or two, with the necessary electronics. So unless you want your phone to be lunchbox sized or bigger, the only other option is way too expensive to be practical, as you would have to have additional components like a ribbon tweeter and a crossover.

i disagree- why waste space and money on expensive speakers in mobile devices. No one wants the return of Radio Raheem on the subway or streets.

I for one am fine with plugging my ipod into the stereo aux when i want to fight the power

Although you make a good point, that a device designed for the consumption of media should have a decent pair of speakers, I disagree with your conclusion that because people are tolerant of lower sound quality they are moving less. There are many earbuds specifically designed for use during physical activity. Sure, the sound quality is lower, but the music is just background for the activity, its not the focus.

The real reason the market has shifted towards headphones and away from large speakers is we prefer to have music be an individual experience rather than a community one.
