Based upon one Thecus product, they are a rip off. I bought the Thecus 4100+ as i wanted all the high end features that they offer. What I didn't know is that the throughput is complete CRAP. I built a server with an old MB, built in RAID and it's 5 times faster. My internet connection is way faster than the local connection to this crappy Thecus box.

Vote Thecus? NO WAY!!!!

seth, it is perfectly possible to install Ampache on Synology.

I have the 410j with it installed.

It supports 3rd party apps. Runs on a customized linux.

I am very satisfied with its functions and their support. Totally recommended

I am in the market for a NAS for home use. I have narrowed it down to either a QNAP or Synology. My main goal (other than network backups) is to be able to stream music to my Android phone. I read the forums for both companies and know that someone set this up with a QNAP NAS with Ampache/Amdroid. I also see that Synology has their own apps for iPhone to support this.

My struggle is that you seem to rate Synology higher, but I cant tell what OS it runs. I can only assume it is a customized Linux. QNAP actualls tells you it runs Linux and seems to support 3rd party apps.

Is it possible to run Ampache on the Synology?

Can you help me off the fence?

Great review...hard to find honest comprehensive NAS home server reviews...thanks for doing it.

Just wondering though why you omitted the HP MediaSmart servers...I was considering one of those and need to compare..

I love this review. and Yes, vote THECUS . I have bought a N2200 at home.
YA~ it is not very good on performance, but with such a aggressive price and helping me save more power, who can compalin?!

The only issue is, their user interface is not as fancy as Qnap. However, thank GOD they have quick install. Just press " yes" and "yes" and "yes", everything will be auto setup.

Just a thought, but have you configured your network to use Jumbo frames?

I have my PC & QNAP TS-109 set to use 8k jumbo frame packets on a Netgear gigabit switch (might even be the same model as yours) and generally receive 30MB/sec transfers to a standard Samsung 1tb SATA drive. I even have an eSATA drive attached to the QNAP and transferring direct to that gives upwards of 16MB/sec.

I should point out drive spin-down works wonderfully too, both internal and eSATA, each spinning up independently only when required :-)

Nice review... I like that it's all one page.
Any reason you neglected to include Drobo in your list of review'ees ?
http://www.drobo.com/
Certainly the most flexible and expandable NAS going around.
I have the 2nd gen with firewire 800, but the newer ones with iSCSI and eSATA are even better.
Thanks for your efforts.
