And it’s not just English Majors, it’s anyone with half a mind to read past the first three letters of a word.
To put it in exceedingly simple terms, “wherefore” is the question form of “therefore”, just as “whom” is the question form of “him”, “where” is the question form of “there” or “here” and “whence” is the question form of “hence”.

(incidentally, I found this article while I was googling for a poem with the line “reason of the cause and the wherefore of the why”. I don’t care two rusted staples about zune and operating systems)

There are two “whys”
1. “Why” – from what cause (in the past)
2. “Why” – for what purpose” (in the future).
It’s similar to the use of “therefore”, instead of just “there”.
