Tether was launched in March, 2009, as a means of allowing people fast, affordable Internet access almost anywhere by letting them work on their laptops via their smartphone data plan. Having proven its success on the BlackBerry platform, Tether is now moving on to more platforms to expand its product range.

"We’re excited to hit another Open Platform like Android, which is growing faster than iPhone &Research in Motion combined," said Tim Burke, CEO of Tether. "We noticed a massive trend of users migrating to this platform, and we are responding to the movement in the marketplace."

According to Gartner Consulting, Android accounted for 25.5 percent of worldwide smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2010. It is now the # 2 operating system, exceeded only by Symbian, which had a 36.6 percent share of the sales.
