Greg, that's a little harsh, especially since you are wrong. If you're going to insult people, get your facts straight first. And give Katie a break. I'm sure you've made your own share of blunders.
Katie, I'm guessing you tried to do a full synchronization that included system files. In that since, Greg was correct and this would totally mess up the target, even if you have the same OS, which you probably don't. A bi-directional sync would kill both the host and the target. What you most likely want to do is a selective backup or synchronization of user documents only. Your other option is to clone your iMac onto your MacBook but there are potential dangers here. In either event, read the documentation thoroughly and understand the difference between backing up, synchronizing, and cloning. Know the difference between a full backup, an incremental backup, and a differential backup. If you are unclear, seek advice from an experienced user.
You'll probably never see this since your post was a year ago, and you probably don't need it now, but maybe it will help someone else from killing the data they are trying to save.

Not so fantastic.

I bought it and tried to synchronise my Imac and Macbook harddrives (perhaps I'm not supposed to but I am just a neophyte so that seemed to be what I wanted to synchronise and no warning otherwise given) -- and some time during the process it crashed and then both computers would only start to the grey screen and spinning gear.

So I've spent the day with my Install discs and copying preferences from Previous Systems as I had to Install and Archive. Still waiting to hear back from their support...
