I'm stuck with this monitor as the DisplayLink is not supported on my older laptop! Is there a way to convert it to a regular VGA monitor?

Since a few of you are mentioning power management problems, don't forget that your USB ports are controlled via power management as well. If you don't want this device to be affected.... turn of the management on the usb ports.

I downloaded the debug tool and enabled full debug output. However, after having restarted the machine a couple times for other things, the driver now functions perfectly fine with respect to enabling the display on a power management message.

After a couple communications with DisplayLink (the company who wrote the drivers), response time has become quite fast. Their guess is that it is timing related, and therefore difficult to pin down. However, it seems to be functioning fine now.

Regarding the power management bug with Windows 7: I just installed the release version of 5.3, and it does not fix the problem. No response back yet as to when they might actually fix this so that one does not have to power cycle the monitor to get the driver to turn on the display again.

I've been looking into buying a 7" monitor to carry around and use with my 13" Macbook Pro. I would like to mostly use it to watch live streaming sports and flash video (justin.tv/veetle/megavideo/youtube/hulu/etc...) while I'm working on other things in the main monitor. I almost purchased the Mimo models but then read that they don't work well with video.

How do the DoubleSight monitors hold up for my system and my needs? Thanks for the excellent review.

I received a reply from DisplayLink (who wrote the drivers and who I believe licenses out their design that DoubleSight and others use). They know it is a problem and state that they have a fix coming out next month when v5.3 is actually released. The beta version, which I also tried, does not contain that fix.

I read in some documentation that it can support up to 9 of them on a machine. However, I would not suggest using on Windows 7 because my previously mentioned power management problem. Their tech support does not seem to respond at all either. Somewhat disappointing.

Hey, this was a great review. Well written and thought out.

My only question was whether or not I could use TWO of these little monitors on one laptop at the same time (meaning three screens at once). I have the USB ports so the HW isn't an issue, but I was wondering if the driver supported it.

And this little guy is gonna be HUGE in the home automation and auto industries. What could be easier than a single USB cable? They do need a touch screen model now though. :) Can anybody answer my multi-USB question? Thanks!!

Purchased the 7" model last week and tried it first on an XP machine, and it functioned fine. Moved it to a Windows 7 machine and it appears the driver does not deal with power management very well. If all displays are turned off due to inactivity, the DoubleSight display never turns itself back on again. The only way to get it to turn on is cycle the power. Of course then anything which was being displayed on the monitor is shoved onto your primary display. Sometimes it also turns off display when logging off. I am waiting for a reply from DoubleSight on this.

It also does not always play nicely with multiple monitors with respect to resolution, but that may be the problem of the other display driver.

Also worth mentioning that while Windows 7 is now supported, Windows Server 2008 R2 is not. It is a paper weight for me right now until DisplayLink can get around their untold "legal issues" and update the driver :(
