The cost per page for laser printing is ridiculously low, especially compared to inkjet. My HP 1012 is at least six years old and still going strong. I'd say my print volume is average, and I replace the cartridge every 1.5 - 2 years. I bought my first replacement toner cartridge at Costco for about $60, but the last time I found one online for $27.

I also have a new Canon MX340 (which you reviewed here) purchased through Amazon for $79. I bought it for the scanner, fax, and very rare color printing. Canon recommends printing at least once a month, which is in line with my experience with other inkjets. Less frequent use = clogged jets and significant ink waste.

Unless people are really doing a lot of color printing, monochrome laser is the way to go (much cheaper to operate and superior output using plain paper). If you do need some color prints, have both a laser and inkjet. Buy the laser and it will pay for itself with they money you don't spend on inkjet cartridges.
