For testing the DiskStation DS713+ was compared to the following NASes.

DiskStation DS712+ (2 TB x 2),

DiskStation DS213+ (1.5 TB x 2)

DiskStation DS209+II (1.5 TB x 2) and

DiskStation DS211j with (1 TB x 2)

Each of these NAS devices was setup in RAID 1 and plugged into a Gigabit based network using Netgear WNDR3700 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Cat 5e cabling.

The Synology DS713+ advertises top speeds of 202.3 MB/sec reads and 135.84 MB/sec writes using Link Aggregation. Unfortunately the switch I was using was not compatible with the Dynamic Link Aggregation protocol. This was reflected in the benchmarks. Although I did get faster speeds with it than using a single Gigabit LAN but definitely not the ones advertised.

To benchmark the DiskStation DS713+ Intel NASPT (Intel NAS Performance Toolkit) was used.

One caveat to testing with this utility is that it is designed to be used with Windows XP 32 bit with 2 GB of RAM, while my test platform was a Windows 7 64 bit system with 8 GB. This may skew the tests, however since the test platform is the same for all NASes being benchmarked, it should provide a relative comparison.

As expected in all the benchmarks the Synology DiskStation DS713+ came out ahead of these other Synology models.






The fastest speed I was able to get with the Synology DS713+ running with Link Aggregation was 165.42 MB/sec, which topped out the 154.1 MB/sec that was achieved with the Synology DS712+. The inability to reach the advertised speeds was most likely due to my home network than the NAS server itself.

Peak power consumption was slightly higher with this model than its predecessor as the Synology DS713+uses a dual core processor. Power consumption is rated at 30.72 W during hard drive access and 17.88W while hibernating.
