I purchased a 900a a year ago form Best Buy because I wanted the smallest full featured netbook I could find. I knew when buying it that I was going to put a larger SSD in it since I had a 4G surf prior with a 4GB SSD and it was worthless. I got a 64GB PATA Runcore and it made the computer as powerful as my desktop so I threw the desktop out and the 900a is now my main computer. I’m not a gamer but I do FULL video editing periodically and the 900a handles it just fine. The PATA drive is giving me ~65 MB/s read rates (HD Tune) and I am tempted to get the Pro IV SATA since it should double the speed of the drive. I also upgraded to a 7800 mAh battery and now I have 5-6 hours between charges. I take this computer everywhere! I am currently searching for a used 900a as a backup because I don’t want any other netbook and they don’t make this one anymore. :>( I have friends with the venerable Sony Viao that are impressed with my netbook performance and distressed that it only costed 1/3 the price of the Viao.

So if I replace the second SSD in my PC901 I install Win7 and can boot from it?

Nice review. Just got a second-hand 900A for my girlfriend. For the time being we will have to live with the 4G SSD. But this is certainly something we will look at in the future.

BTW: “but let’s face it, most everything is Windows and to be any kind of productive with the EeePC you’ll need to install Windows on it. This isn’t a Linux vs Windows or even vs Mac rant, so I don’t want to hear about it”

Then don’t start the rant if you do not want to hear about it. I will put GNU/Linux on it, and it will trash any Windows 900A out there…

I have a eee900 with a 900Mhz Atom in it. There is only 1 PCI-e slot. How did you transfer the OS (XP) to the new SSD? Can I xfer the OS to a USB drive, swap SSD’s, then xfer the OS to the new SSD somehow?

Will that work in any Laptop with free mini pci-e slot? I have gaming laptop, Gateway P-7811FX with 2×2.5″ HDD bays which have two 500GB 7200rpm drives. But i noticed i have a free mini PCI-e slot, next to WIFI card. So if it works , i can have SSD for OPsys and those 2.5″ sata HDD’s for storage and that makes 3 hardrives in 1 laptop )) But will it work? Is this a bios question, how the spesific motherboard bios will recognise that SSD?

Nice report ! I put a Runcore SATA Pro 64GB in my 900A last year
and speeds were around 90/100 Mbyte/s there, slightly below the latest one.

Yes price is a concern and thus a Runcore is only something the real die hard
eee fan will invest in. It does change the personality of the machine.
However 900A’s aren’t on the market any more and Asus don’t have any PC’s with
these type of miniPCIe cards on the market now. It’s all 2.5″ SATA and 8 hour battery life.

I have the 32GB Runcore Pro IV model, it is perfect and much less expensive than the 64GB model.

This product saved our Asus from being a full time door stop. Now my wife and I cannot put it down we fight over the thing all the time. It is actually now the fastest computer we own NO EGSADURATION.
