me anonymous again and i dont tink that there is a backwards compatibility option if the game doesnt support the motion plus, think about if the game wasnt made to recognize the motion plus then it probably won't, the only hack i can think of is patching the game itself, but i could be wrong about this whole post, you should do some research of ur own.

I saw that too, it is a typo, you do NOT have to go to the home menu to initialize the controllers. You do have to have all the controllers 'linked' to a "home wii" console. But this is only done once (the first time you ever ised that controller with that WII console) and involves the red reset button inside the WII mote's battery compartment. After that you need to go to the pause menu, choose wii mote options, then press 1 and 2 button on each controller when prompted to do so.

p.s. Didier, you all have terrible writing skills. i am an amateur author with basic education, therefore, i make mistakes as well. You must be lazy or stupid.

In a perfect world it would have been like this on day one. But back then, the technology was too expensive and too bulky from what I hear. The same thing is being said about MS's project Natal. How much will it cost? Look how much cheaper the Blu Ray is compared to when the PS3 launched. There was no way people would spend $150 on each wii mote so we got a half hearted version which seemed fairly capable till the WM+. I'm happy with that since I only have to spend $20 more to upgrade or get it bundled. Pretty stupid to say this is the way it should have been on day one - you could say that about everything (looks at 1GB hardrive PC from 1996).

I've worked with making some computer games using the wiimote's via a bluetooth server. As far as backwards compatibility I don't think it's something they could do with a firmware update. With the original controller we got data, now there is just more data, combining this together is what makes it more accurate. One game I made was a drumming game, I could tell when someone snapped the remote, but determining if it snapped on a downstroke or an upstroke was impossible. Orientation could be determined when the remote was stationary or being slowly moved, but once quick movement occurred the accelerometers would top out orientation was impossible to determine. This put a huge amount of limitations on the device, and made for some very inaccurate responses. The idea that Nintendo would design the interface for reading the raw data is a bad idea, this would severely limit the possibilities that developers would have for interaction. The best solution would just be that game released patches for motion plus support, but that's not going to happen for many financial reasons. For now we should just look at this as the second era of the wii, the one we all thought was going to start at launch.

As a reaction on the backwards compatibility discussion:

I agree that some things simply can't be changed after a game has been developed, but if nintendo would've provided a good API that provided wiimote motion information to a game, i.e. the sensor information would be interpreted by nintendo, (which would be a good design decision imho) they could've simply changed their own code. It's not like the transition from gamecube to wii: normal controls to motion controls, but it's the transition from motion controls to more sensitive motion controls.

Apparently game programmers had to interpret the wiimote sensor data themselves, so the old games can't benefit from the M+. Too bad, would've definitely gotten one otherwise.

I own the M+ and can tell you that it does not interfere with your existing games, so you can keep it plugged in, even if you are playing Super Mario Galaxy. Naturally, the M+ extension will make your controller too long to fit inside your peripherals, so you'll probably have to either detach it or just not use your peripherals. I dont own any of these peripherals and still play Mario Kart and House of the Dead just fine.

To clarify, do you need to remove the M+ part to play something like Super Mario Galaxy? Or is it only games that use a peripheral tha the wiimote fits into such as steering wheel or gun?

The author obviously has no idea how software is made. I agree that Nintendo was a little short sighted in not making the Wiimote have MotionPlus control from the get go, but to complain that they wont "update firmware" to allow older game use the MotionPlus, is a just a poor argument.

MotionPlus is new hardware sir, thus current games today would have to have to somehow have it programed to use the hardware. Wanting yesterday's games to magically take advantage fo the MotionPlus, is as absurd of a comment as saying I want Gamecube games to take advantage fo the Wiimote.

Also in case your wondering, the MotionPlus adds in a inertia sensitive chip. The Wiimote uses Accelerometer which could only detect orientation and speed. Inertia sensors h ever read as very sensitive to movement, reporting back to console speed and direction. inertia sensors can not tell you anything about orientation, which is why we still need the accelerometers.

maybe nintendo wii designers were not forward-thinking enough to make a controller API general enough so that old games would be automatically improved with motion plus.

My point: its might not be possible to make old games compatible, unless games rewritten
