I notice a lot of (free) WinX users complaining about speed and output-file size. WinX defaults to maximum quality. (I'm okay with that.) Quality -- and hence file size -- is user-definable via the "video settings," specifically the "video quality" setting. The higher the kB, the better the quality, the bigger the file, and the longer the rip -- and vice versa. Other settings no-doubt also impact speed and size, but I've only started using this application.

I've noticed that, with certain dvd's, (free) WinX will pop up a notice that the disk "contains the new copy protection," with a link to the not-so-free upgrade. I've found that the dvd frequently can be ripped anyway (ignoring the pop up). Besides, there's no harm trying.

DVD fab decrypter will rip your DVD in less than 10 minutes on such a PC. It is the king of DVD rippers and it is free.

Thanks for the review! I'm not sure I would consider "almost as long as if I had watched the movie" to be particularly long. Really nice professional rips can take several times the length of a movie (in other words - an overnight rip!) when using considered customised settings (where the software allows). I'm going to try this one, as my new media player always plays Handbrake rips (mkv/mp4) badly with juddering and stuttering (no idea why) so I'm gonna try ripping to wmv. Thanks again.

Hi ,
I am using the free version and you get very good image results with the tool, sharp
quality from a +- 7 GB file to +- 1 GB outputfile (using it only for Xvid)
However, there is one point that need to be fixed and its going on with the
newer an older version as i see.
When you want subtitles (yes), then after you playing your outputfile on a regulair
TV set with the PAL system you wil see your subtitles out of the screen, this is
anoying specialy with 4:3 movies and also you can't get your screen filled for 16:9
movies because of that (thats not the fault in my mediaplayers).
I using the tool for cretation of my personal moviebox (HD) and watching movies
without watching 5 minutes copyright for the movie begins.(not to mention TV
series ! 7 discs = 7 times)
It is making my nuts because i am a big buyer of dvd's ! ..so............

best regards

Maybe someone can help me out here. I purchased the Plantinum Version the day before yesterday, and most of the DVDs I am trying to rip fail within a few seconds of starting the conversion. I'm only trying to convert to normal Apple TV, (MPEG4), format.

I wrote an email to their support, who sent back what seems to be a form email saying try installing on a non-system partition. Try writing to a non-system partition. Try using the "safe mode" option. Try closing all other programs while running. All done, and make no difference.

Then it goes on to suggest trying other DVDs. That's all well and good, but what happens when I want to put my DVD collection up to my network, and only 1 out of every 8 DVDs actually rips using this software.

I would love to hear suggestions or anyone who has run into a similar issue, and ways to solve it.

I downloaded the free version yesterday to try. All I want to do is convert to MP4 to transfer to my IPOD. It is working fine and not as slow as some are finding it. I do have dual core & 3gb. For a free ripper I dont think there is much better.

Thanks for your review.
I downloaded the GAOTD WinX DVD Ripper Platinum yesterday
and tried to copy my DVD favourite movie "The Blues Brothers"
to a blank DVD but I could not.
The software only copied the DVD into a working folder on my
computer. What I wanted was a 1:1 copy from disk to disk.

Any thoughts?
